The “Wild West” truly earns its name in this sequel to The Thirteenth Child. Finished with school, Eff isn’t sure what she wants to do with her life, but decides to accompany a professor and circuit magician across the Mammoth River (that is, the Mississippi) to document new flora and fauna. While they know that the mission will be dangerous, they don’t expect to find a creature that petrifies even the dreaded ice dragons – literally. As the attacks become more numerous, even Eff’s unique mix of magic might not be enough to save the settlements on Columbia’s frontier. But with so many lives at stake, she knows she has to try.

Best described as "Laura Ingalls Wilder meets fantasy" and loaded with Patricia C. Wrede’s typical astounding world-building and realistic dialogue, the story starts out slowly, but soon enough you’ll find yourself unable to stop turning the pages. Across the Great Barrier is released this month!

I think the title of this book alone should qualify it as a bestseller. In The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of her own Making, a young girl named September is plucked from her home in Omaha, Nebraska by the Green Wind and taken to fairyland. Left to her own devices, she meets witches, a wyvern whose father was a library, a boy named Saturday, and a plethora of other unique creatures. But fairyland is in turmoil, and it’s up to September to return it to order and defeat the evil Marquess who made everything topsy-turvy in the first place.

While this is a book marketed to intermediate readers, it reads like some sort of strange (but awesome) combination of Alice in Wonderland and Lemony Snicket. With humor that might pass over younger readers’ heads, it still has enough magic and wonder to keep readers of all ages captivated until the very end.

Violet Willoughby finds it hard to believe in ghosts when she’s helped her mother make a living as a fake medium most of her life. But when the ghostly form of a girl with bruises around her neck appears beside her living twin, the supernatural becomes hard to deny. Violet must uncover the mystery of Rowena’s murder, labeled a tragic accident, before her prickly sister Tabitha meets the same fate. With a country manor house filled with guests – nearly all of them, including the host, suspects – Violet’s task isn’t an easy one, and Rowena becomes ever more persistent.

Filled with a cast of eccentric characters, mystery, and classic 19th century scandal, Haunting Violet is a fast-paced read that will keep you guessing until the last page.

You don’t see much steampunk – that is, a novel set in Victorian times, if Victorian times had high-tech machines – in the young adult section. That said, the plot of The Girl in the Steel Corset is fresh, different, and interesting, and will keep the reader turning pages to find out what happens next. Finley Jayne has a darker side that comes out when she’s threatened – one that can throw footmen across a room. She thinks she’s the only one with such abilities until she meets Griffin, the only one who has control over her darker side; Sam, who is stronger than he should be; and Emily, who has red, ropey hair and can talk to machines.

While the novel is fairly well written overall, the descriptions become extremely repetitive (the aforementioned red, ropey hair is described no less than 11 times in the first 350 pages). Not much attention was paid to Victorian language or mannerisms (which Patricia C. Wrede shows, in Sorcery and Cecelia, can be managed even with the addition of magic). And while I appreciated the setting being in London after spending four months there last semester, it didn’t seem like the author took much time to learn anything about the city except for a few place names. But if you can ignore all of that, The Girl in the Steel Corset is a good story and will certainly appeal to Twilight fans.

This final installment in the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling is an adventure fully deserving of being split into two movies (unlike some books I could mention). Filled with mystery, danger, epic battles, and the power of friendship, Rowling wraps up all of the loose ends she created throughout the series in this last chapter of Harry’s adventures. Probably my second favorite Harry Potter book (after Prisoner of Azkaban, of course), this book will keep you on your toes until the very last page.

As some of you may know, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two was released today in theatres. While it is my favorite movie of all eight, remember that the book is always better than the movie!

Finn knows nothing but Incarceron, a self-perpetuating prison built as a solution to the chaos created by man. Prisoners are born there and die there, but Finn wants to escape. Claudia, the warden’s daughter, also longs for freedom from an engagement to a bratty prince. With the discovery of a couple of mysterious keys, and with growing trust in each other, they may be able to get out – if they can find the door. Incarceron is a different kind of fantasy filled with secrets, plots, and tangled motives that will keep readers on the edge of their seats until the very last page.

This book contains one fast-paced adventure after another and is sure to please any intermediate reader. Its sequel, The Curse of Deadman’s Forest, is new to paperback.

When Jacob Reckless enters his father’s study, he intends to find answers to the man’s mysterious disappearance a year before. He doesn’t anticipate finding those answers in a strange world on the other side of the mirror hanging on the wall. Jacob hides this discovery from his mother and brother for years, but one day his brother follows him. Will learns that the stories Jacob brought back from “travelling” – the child-eating witches, talking foxes, and fairies – are all true. Then Will is attacked by a Goyl, a type of stone creature intent on enslaving the human race. As Will’s skin slowly turns to stone, Jacob is in a race against time to prevent his brother from turning in to one of the monsters. Though the reader will find familiar creatures from fairy tales in this book, as the front cover says, “if you’re looking for happily ever after, you’ve come to the wrong place…”

Written by Cornelia Funke, author of Inkheart, Reckless shares some other-worldly features with the Ink World. But it’s a darker tale, and perfect for boys – even reluctant readers!

Fire is a young woman of seventeen with gorgeous red hair and part-monster blood. Her monster half allows her to feel, read, and control the minds of humans if she so wishes. Not wanting to be known as a monster, Fire attempts to live her life “as an apology for her father’s” and tries to make up for his misdeeds. But as her abilities draw her in to a mystery of an assassin as well as a political game, it becomes clear that she’s always going to be a monster to someone.

Perfect for fans of Tamora Pierce and girls who find most strong female heroes in fantasy more realistic than those found in the YA “realistic fiction” section. Kristin Cashore writes a believable female protagonist who doesn’t wait around moping over boys. In Fire’s own words, “You are neither my husband nor my father; I am a woman of seventeen, I have my own horses and my own money, and I decide for myself where I go and when. This is not yours to forbid.” While this book takes place in the same universe as Cashore’s first book, Graceling, it is not a sequel (but you should buy both anyway!).

In The Mislaid Magician, Kate and Cecelia are ten years older than they were in Sorcery and Cecelia and The Grand Tour. This story follows their families as they deal with magical plights across the country that threaten the security of the realm. It is written in letter format like the first book in the series and has the added intrigue of correspondence between the husbands of these ladies of quality. Though I enjoyed Sorcery and Cecelia more, this book was also enjoyable and can be read as a standalone novel.

After taking an amulet from one of the wizards with the intention to sell it, he quickly learns that it was a mistake. The amulet once belonged to the Demon King, the wizard who nearly destroyed the world with his evil powers. This first novel in a new series by Cinda Williams Chima is a real page-turner!

I was disappointed when this book was originally released only in audio as I find it difficult to follow books by just listening to them, but I was ecstatic when I learned it was being released in paperback! This story follows Evvy, who readers first met in Street Magic, the second book in the Circle Opens Quartet. Now fourteen, Evvy and Rosethorn travel to the Battle Islands to determine why the plants and animals are dying. After Evvy finds an important clue, it’s up to her to stop a disaster. In classic Tamora Pierce style, this book has great characters and descriptions, and though it features characters from previous books, it can be read as a standalone.
