Mare Barrow is a poor Red blood in a world where the Silver blood rules. The Reds do all the labor and are basically servants while the Silvers have special powers and live in beautiful homes. By chance Mare gets a job as a servant for the royals and, while in the middle of the princess trials (where the prince will pick his princess), she falls into the arena and discovers in front of everyone that she has a power too. The king forces Mare to play the part of a long lost Silver princess to cover up the impossibility of a Red blood having an ability. One wrong move on her part and she knows they will kill her.
