Welcome!
Saturn Booksellers, Gaylord's hometown bookstore right in the heart of the Alpine Village, is a general, independent shop for readers of all ages. An eclectic atmosphere (think chalkboard walls and a coffee shop in a log cabin built right into the store...), a friendly, knowledgeable staff composed of true bibliophiles, a wide selection of books and related goodies, a full calendar of events, free wi-fi and a real sense of fun make Saturn Booksellers a destination for locals and tourists alike.

The bookstore was named the 2007 Michigan Retailer of the Year! The award is given annually by the Michigan Press Assn. and the Michigan Retailers' Assn. and is based primarily on community involvement. Congratulations to all of our awesome booksellers!

On behalf of my staff and myself, welcome to our 'virtual store.' We hope you enjoy shopping Gaylord's hometown bookstore 24/7. As always, your loyalty is invaluable to us! Jill Miner, owner

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet
by Ford, Jamie
This is essentially a love story between Henry, a Chinese boy growing up in the forties in Seattle, and Keiko, his Japanese friend who was sent to an internment camp with her family.

At first, Henry is the only Asian at his all-white elementary school. He is there on scholarship, and is generally harassed and bullied as anti-Asian sentiment takes hold. His father makes him wear a button that says “I am Chinese” so that he won’t be treated as the enemy.

But then “the enemy” comes to sixth grade – in the form of Keiko – and soon she becomes Henry’s only friend besides a black jazz musician who wails his sax on the sidewalks.

Despite his parents’ forbidding him to, Henry hangs out with Keiko and even goes to her house and befriends her family.

All too soon the Japanese are herded out of Seattle and into internment camps, where Keiko and Henry’s friendship is forced to blossom long distance.

This story is interspersed with the contemporary account of Henry – widower, father and unhappy man. His entire world is turned upside down when renovators of the long-abandoned Panama Hotel find a warren of trunks in the basement belonging to Japanese families who hastily stored them there as they were forced to abandon their belongings on the way to the camps.

This is a moving story and an interesting read about a time in history that has been easy to sweep under the rug. --Jill

Once Dead, Twice Shy
by Harrison, Kim
Madison Avery's prom night killed her -- literally. So, now she's dead, sort of. Because she snatched the amulet of power away from the dark reaper who killed her, stole her body, and tried to collect her soul, she has the illusion of life and a body, but she has absolutely no idea what is going on. Kim Harrison's witty paranormal thriller has that perfect balance of humor, danger, and romance.--Karen Keyte, Books Etc. (Portland, ME)
